  1. If you're after a good monitor wedge plan (or an angle Calculator in Excel to get the desired tilt to the box) then let me know and i'll direct you to a good one, using drivers that cost less than £150 for the pair inc horn.
  2. Thanks, as of yesterday i now own some Futurelight 575 scans and at 25kg a piece they need some serious stands/truss to fix them to. Whilst Powerdrive are the dogs danglies, they're only worth buying 2nd hand due to massive retail price. However its nice to see some other options, especially ones with standard fixing sizes and a full range of accessories
  3. Depends on what they want in the monitor mix really and the sort of band they are. If its purely vox then they should be ok providing the band aren't a 'loud' music type like metal, punk, etc with lots of backline screaming away. If they want a fuller mon mix including instruments then you're going to struggle to give the keys/bass/guitar the sort of sound they're after from such a small cone driver, especially at those power ratings. The Nexo PS8/10 are capable of just about living in this world but they're a far cry from a Skytec or similar box (performance and money-wise!). 12"
  4. I was very dissappointed to have forgotten to bid on a job lot (9) of assorted Martin Punisher/destroyer stepper motors and motor/gearbox combos on Ebay recently. Given that i recently had to replace a motor/gearbox combo at cost of ~£50, the £11 (inc p&p) final selling price was a snip..... http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/sad.gif
  5. For best bang for buck and good support from some decent commercial applications (Chamsys MagicQ for 1 which Raaawwks!!!) and non-commercial (Freestyler) try the Enttec USB Pro. If you plan on using it live then its advised you use the pro as it has processing built in rather than the OpenUSB which is cheaper but doesn't. If you plan on running other stuff on the PC then you stand a much better chance of everything staying in sync with the Pro. Its still only the price of a crap desk and there are more and more products coming on the market which support it. Look at it as a longer term inve
  6. I would suspect that the sound quality from that usb item would be not quite up to scratch. I use an Echo Indigo DJ which is a PCMCIA card with 2 outputs for routing your cue, or so you can use software such as Traktor to use a virtual number (up to 4) of CD decks.
  7. I think that the reason why it was designed for band use was so that you could get back to the old method of sound reinforcement which involved backline also being the FoH system and everyone then also had their own monitor system. It was terrible to get a balance and players had to be very aware of themselves in amongst the overall mix..... kinda why we now have monitors and FoH and monitor techs. The L1 now gives an individual sound source/monitor for each musician but has the benefits of being the same across the board so colourationfrom different types of speaker is minimized. Bass fr
  8. QUOTE I tend to agree Kingy. I would expand on that however and say that most DJs, KJs and bands play a lot louder than is necessary and the trend over the last 5 or 6 years to become increasingly bass-heavy is a worrying trend. Your ears will generally deal with bass heavy music a lot better than excessively loud high and mid range. Also, for perchieved equal loudness the bass end below 200hz needs to be significantly louder, as shown by the Fletcher Munson work. I would always rather hear a bass heavy rig than one that is too top heavy. Systems of this type (toppy) tend to be tiring a
  9. QUOTE Sound is personal and I find the bottom end on 12" speakers not generally as pleasing to me as 15" drivers. It never will be and no 12" and tweeter combo is going to ever be a 'full range' cab. By design it is flawed as you're simply asking the 12" to do too much, and in order to achieve the higher notes the driver construction has to be such that will prevent it from doing the low notes. A 12" can do sub duty fine in the right box but thats 'just' sub, and will be in a fairly narrow passband. If you want bass out of a 12" and tweeter/comp driver config, then use a sub to compleme
  10. QUOTE Oh I think the Futurelight optics are probably better. Than the 918's? Or am i getting the wrong end? I've used Futurelight stuff before and been impressed, but Martin are just fantastic, not just a name brand. Too pricey for the amount of work i do really though apart from their cheaper 2nd hand stuff. The ACME lights are the same as the Chauvet Intimidator (scan) and insignia (barrel) btw. Good value for money, but starting to get outgunned for the cash by these newer Martin MX style knockoffs.
  11. Well unless i suddenly find i have a rich dying auntie, they'll have to do in place of the Martin 918's.... http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/smile.gif
  12. QUOTE At the time no comment was made about a 900 person audience or reference to the type of music being played No, you're right, at that point the exact details of the gig were unknown. However, the gig in question does require (imo) something more than a mobile system. trying to make do on a gig that is really too big normally only results in dissappointment for all. the provider ends up with (sometimes a lot of) broken kit due to pushing it too hard and the organiser and crowd don't get what they want. I know this is a mobile DJ forum but there others here who have involvemen
  13. Not yet, but I'm planning on some Futurelight DJ scan 575's and there's another place in Germany (search for Futurelight on international and you'll find them) that also takes paypal so they take care of all the currency conversion at no charge (unlike your bank!) I'm specifically after high output heads/scans with rotating fx and at that price point you just have no other competition! Every other manufacturer comes in around £1000 for those features. You can get the rotating gobo MSD 250/2 scanner for ~£150, thats gotta be good value, especially when you compre to the UK branded equiva
  14. The discharge versions also burn with a colder colour temp, more ice blue than bright sunlight. are your versions the MSD 250/2 or the 150's?
  15. QUOTE As for your comment about the pro audio market, are you saying I'm not a professional audio client? Yes, in the PA sense of the term. Disco's/Wedding DJ's/whatever the correct term is do not generally buy into the PA end of the market, hence why so many questions here around what budget range cabs off ebay will make the best rig, and why there are so many (type) threads expalaining what an active crossover is/does. With a Bose system i'd say you're fairly near the top of the pecking order but it doesn't mean you could go out and do sound for a concert or big event. As you said you
  16. Worth checking this place out too, you'll need to use google translation but they post to Europe (so that'll include us!) and seem to be around £50 cheaper per head than Thomann (if thats possible!) http://stores.ebay.co.uk/ATLD-Ton-Licht-Se...7QQftidZ2QQtZkm The lights are all the same apart from being branded by different companies to what we normally see over here, and it doesn't take much to see which ones. Still curious why we pay through the nose for things like the MDS250 iSolution head when they can do the same thing for £150 in Germany....
  17. If you're interested in scans, can i suggest you look at thomann or search ebay international for eurolite or HQ. They're the same lights only seem to be much cheaper in Germany. As Germany's vat is 16% you'll end up paying a very sim, ilar amount to what it says on ebay. You can currently buy Futurelight 575 scans (rotating gobos, prisms, dimmer, 8ch) for £350 which is obscenely cheap considering the spec
  18. How about reading the manual where it tells you how you would reverse a channel fader, then doing the reverse on the offending channel? Or is that too easy? I'll give you a clue, if its anything like the DMX50a manual its on page ten, the first section.
  19. QUOTE In fact, I'd not be surprised if we started seeing similar concepts from other manufacturers in a few years, once they've caught up with the Bose research of course. And its exactly comments like that which make me want to respond in a less than positive way.... Bose have tried and marketed over the years, many alternative speaker designs, many of which had been tested and discarded by other manufacturers, due to not fulfilling some of the criteria for the application. Its the insistence to continually hail Bose as being trailblazing pioneers ahead of every other design shop th
  20. QUOTE If that was true, then portability, distribution of sound, visual appeal, ease of transportation, modular expandability, visual impact and brand recognition would have no bearing. In the real world, these were big factors in my choice to invest so heavily in the L1 system and I know the same is true for the other L1 owners True, and i suppose again it comes down to market you're providing for, and what is required of the system. I'm in the area of sound and lighting provision, where coverage, spl (particularly across the full range including very lows), clarity, modular expansion an
  21. QUOTE My thoughts exactly this system has really changed peoples way of thinking when it comes to discos and what they traditionally look like. They're speakers, its about the sound. I also don't see anything too revolutionary about them. The bass are more than likely 4th or 6th order bandpass boxes (Bose still holds the patents for 6th so it would seem daft they wouldn't use them, and they provide high output in the passband) and the mids/tops are probably multiple small format vertical arrays or a large format ribbon (again, known for low distortion due to much reduced moving mass of
  22. So are you saying that the sound co will be expected to make provision for power as well then? If so, will the lampies be expected to use the same source or provide their own? A bit OT, but heard this the other day... Q. How many sound engineers does it take to change a light bulb? A. 'Sorry mate, I don't do lights.....' well it had me rolling around.....!! http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/biggrin.gif
  23. QUOTE "mine is bigger than yours" replies. I take it this your OT thread relating to the 'Biggest rig' thread? The question was asked 'who has the biggest?' The responses came. It was kinda asking for it really.... If your beef is with my response to your post, it was approached purely from the direction of what is and is not appropriate for a given gig. Whilst I'm sure the Bose system performs well for you, it isn't, and will never be a stadium sound system, despite what Bose claim (and they have made some claims in their time....) Now that we have some more info about th
  24. QUOTE But just to assist the debate here.... its an outdoor stage, audience approx 900... Dance/electronica night.... they are having a few guest DJ's, etc Ok, thats better. First off, outdoors means that traditional reflex boxes will probably not be sufficient (unless in greater numbers) due to their lower spl capability. Most outdoor events will spec a horn loaded rig. this also helps with keeping the noise police happy as horn systems are much more directional so they can be pointed away from the nearest complainants. Dance/electronica means that you'll want hoofing amounts o
  25. QUOTE I'm going to do a big spanner in the works here. THIS IS NOT A BOSE ADVERT just my personal views. If you are trying to cover a large area the Bose L1 has a remarkable area of coverage (170 deg) and giving sound levels (at distance) greater than the power output would suggest. Bose have suggested that for the same db at a given range the power would have to many thousands of watts for a 'standard' speaker system against an L1 system. This is the bit that many people cannot get their heads around. Neither can I. Laws of physics etc, etc..... What you are hearing i think,
