Last Orders

When you are asked to announce last orders for the bar, do you feel a need or sense of duty to shout it immediately over the current track?, or do you wait until a more convenient time, such as between tracks, even if there is 3m.50s left to play and the landlord is stood next to you impatiently tapping his feet and looking at his watch.

Depends on how I feel, how full the dance floor is, what's playing, how much notice is given (e.g. 5 mins or 15 mins) and how big the landlord is smile icon

If invited by the bar, I'll lower the track volume and announce at the requested time.

It's a strange thing...lower the volume over a track and the audience wonder what's going on, so task complete!! But say something in between tracks, and who really gives a stuff!? Just something I noticed at public gigs.

Prefer to do it at the end of the track, but depends on the venue and occasion. eg if it's 11.50 and the function finishes at 12.00 and I have just started playing a tune, i would announce last orders straight away.

Yes at a disco silence is the loudest noise mid gig.

 

It also depends on who the client is. Calling last orders and indeed there is a taxi outside is a service we provide for free. Next time your on a private gig ask for a free drink in exchange for a last orders announcement lol

I always ask about last orders before I start then I can fit it in when I want at the most convenient time.

At residencies I always know when last orders is to be called, and so do it between songs at roughly the same time every week. At private parties I ask the bar staff to give me plenty of notice so I can time the announcement between tracks where possible.

I play up to the time im booked til! Unless the bar request to be finished before hand.

I always call it straight away.

 

Slimboy Fat: Depends what time I am booked until. The time the bar closes is irrelevant to what time I finish.

 

In the old days (gets his stick out) the disco always finished about 30 minutes after the bar closed, but these days, I find more and more venues where the disco finishes at the same time the bar closes.

I always aks the Manager what time the bar is closing and announce it accordingly at the designated time.I find that this also helps the Duty Manager out and also adds a touch of authority and professionalism.

i always announce it straight away, but i always make the taxi drivers wait unless they have asked nicely regarding finish times i play at three venues where the bar stays open for an hour after the disco finishes which causes problems trying to explain to drunk obnoxious people that cant understand why your finishing.

It really gets my goat when Taxi drivers just come up to you, look at you and say "Edwards going to Birmingham" etc, no please, no thank you, no "I am the taxi driver", nothing. So they wait.

 

And then you try to battle past inconsideratley parked taxi drivers outside the gig..... :rant:

 

At one of my resident venues they block in people on purpose and pretend not to hear you when you try to get their attention, ignorant people like this get nothing from me. One company is on the verge of being banned from the venue's car park.
