  1. I must admit that I've never given it a thought when it comes to rules about playing songs, except which one will work best, next. The only 'rule' I have is not to play the same song twice in the same night.
  2. I think that a cooling off period of seven days is required by law if YOU approach the customer, i.e. knocked on their door or signed them up in a shopping centre. If they approach you, no cooling off period is required, although a commercial decision might dictate that offering one makes good business sense.
  3. Help - Beatles Trapped - Colonel Abrams Separate Lives - Phil Collins & Marilyn Martin or what about the song my dad wanted played at the church..... ........Onward Christian Soldiers http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/533.gif Needless to say my mum wasn't to keen on that. http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/188.gif
  4. In terms of loading on the controller, they will draw about 0.75 Amps resistive. Whether the bulb will enjoy going on and off continually is another question. http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/533.gif

  6. I don't mean this post to sound patronising or condacending, but it really heartens me to find that there are other DJs out there who are as conscientious and proud as I am in the job that they do. The number of DJs I've seen over the years who dress like tramps, who smoke and drink while working, whose equipment looks like something out a museum, who think that they audience is a pain and people who ask for requests are some kind of alien being. My biggest concern is weddings, as they are generally a one-off event (Liz Taylor, Rod Stewart, etc are exempt), with the reception being the p
  7. I have Peavey Messenger 15" 4 Ohm speakers and I have a C-Mark 525+525 Watt amp which I got for about £150. Never had any problems with it. Here a link to one company but shop around for the best deal.
  8. QUOTE (RobbieD @ Sep 11 2006, 02:51 PM) I certainly don't agree with the attitude that it's not worth providing the best quality sound because "an audience dancing under the influence of alcohol isn't going to notice"! It's certainly not an attitude to providing a lesser service. When I started using a computer for DJing, the majority of my songs were 128 Kbps, and I've never had any complaints. I was merely asking whether an audience, after a couple of shandies, would noticed any discernable difference. Whilst it would certainly be a pain in the ar$e to re-rip my collection to a higher
  9. QUOTE (pdarnett @ Sep 10 2006, 03:07 AM) anything by Doctor and the (para) Medics ? Quite like that play on words http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/biggrin.gif , but as their only hit was Spirit in the Sky, doesn't give a good vibe, is that how his patients ended up???
  10. QUOTE (welshyDJ18 @ Sep 9 2006, 07:15 PM) QUOTE (superstardeejay @ Sep 9 2006, 07:12 PM) Will the installed speakers give enough volume? Aren't they just background music speakers? just what i was thinking... why not use just your kit? The layout of the room and the position of the built-in DJ booth to the dance floor would make the positioning of my speakers difficult. The optimum position for the speakers would mean a long cable run and a trip hazard with the stands. This is the benefit of carrying out a site visit a few months before, as I now have time to explore my opti
  11. It certainly is an interesting discussion. At my next soundcheck, I'm going to have the same song at 128, 160, 192, 256 and 320 Kbps. I will set it to random play and see if I can notice any difference, a sort of blind, or should that be deaf, test. http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/headphone.gif I let you now my findings. Would the choice of song make a difference as well and if so, can you recommend three songs that would make a good sample.
  12. QUOTE (norty303 @ Sep 9 2006, 05:53 PM) As the level increases the nuances of low bitrate encoding seem to show up more. If I were playing classical music or jazz to a knowledgeable audience I would agree that they may notice a reduction in quality, but do you really think an audience dancing under the influence of alcohol is going to notice the nuances of Van Halen, Kelly Marie, Infernal, Robbie, etc?
  13. QUOTE (Kingy @ Sep 9 2006, 01:55 PM) An active crossover would be the best solution. Any suggestions???
  14. QUOTE (otronics @ Sep 7 2006, 11:43 PM) For a very tight budget, yes, it's not bad but compared to what you can buy on the market, well, not a patch on it! I'm intrigued by that comment and others in a different post about bit rates of 192 or higher. Do you really think that in a disco environment at the volumes generally used that any noticeable difference can be detected by the audience between the output of this unit and one for £100, or between mp3s ripped at 128 KHz and ones ripped at 192 or 320 KHz. I have been using a computer for work for about 18 months now with files ripped
  15. Just visited a venue for a wedding next year and they have four speakers mounted in the ceiling, either 8" or 10" with tweeter. I'd like to use my Peavey 4 Ohm Pro-15s to add some bass, but only bass and not full range. I have a C-Mark 525+525 amp. I thought about turning down the mid and treble on the feed to my speakers but wasn't sure if this would work. Can it be done with what I've got and if not, what would I need?? Advice and suggestions please?
  16. Sometimes at events like these with an older crowd, I did a 60th Wedding Anniversary last week, a sing-a-long can work well. Songs such as Andy Stewart - Roamin' in the Glomin', I love a lassie (maybe not so hot down south) Tom Jones - Delilah Elvis - The Wonder of You Platters/Freddie - The Great Pretender Scaffold - Lily the Pink It's a good way to get everyone joining in, even those who might not want/like to dance. I'm sure you'll get more suggestions for songs
  17. That's a bold prediction, given the challenge from Justin and Robbie, but I have to agree I think it will be No 1 http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/thumbup.gif
  18. QUOTE (desperatedan @ Aug 29 2006, 08:45 AM) Hi Guys Just a Update on this. I decided to try one of these as for the price thought what the hell. Well it arrived and it works really well tried it in a live environment on Saturday. Using this with OTS if you set the live sound to go out via this dongle and you can then pre-listen to tracks via the laptops soundcard by using OTS player. More than happy with results in live environment, so if you are looking for a cheap solution to be able to use a laptop to play music and listen to othere tracks I wouldnt hesitate in recomendin

  20. I have heard these scare stories as well and to the best of my knowledge, I'm not aware of any licensed premises that have closed in Edinburgh since the ban started, although I think the situation might change, depending on how cold and wet a winter we get. There are two downsides for DJing with the ban. Firstly, your scanners and moonflowers look http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/pooh.gif and you definately need a smoke machine, with all the problems that brings to certain premises and secondly every now and then half your audience disappears. The first few weeks I thought I ha

QUOTE (McCardle @ Sep 4 2006, 04:11 PM) Freda Payne band of gold since you've been gone all that is left is a band of gold........ http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/fear.gif Obviously thought the title was apppropriate, pity they hadn't listened to the words, or maybe they knew something you didn't. Are they still married http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/071.gif

  24. We had the thread where we were discussing songs for ending the night, so I'm curious as to songs you've been asked for as a first dance at a wedding, as I've just received my list for a wedding in a couple of weeks with Oasis - Wonderwall as the first song.

    Floor Fillers

I find a good song to get them started after the buffet is Whitney Houston and the Hot Tracks remix of I want to dance with somebody, as after about a minute of music it goes straight into the chorus, altogether now......... Oh, I wanna dance with somebody, I wanna feel the heat of some body http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/Protest_emoticon.gif
