Music collections

Recommended Posts

I was speaking to a couple of DJs today who were discussing the sale of disco equipment and would I be interested in an item or two?

I asked if any music would be included in the sale and the firm reply was no!

One DJ said that his music collection purchased for 'the disco' is essentially personal and not an integral part of the overal disco business.

The other said that if he sold on all the disco equipment (business) he would never sell his music, not one disc even if there were music discs that were never played because the music was purchased essentially for personal collection (hobby) and listening pleasure and indeed specific to his taste and consequently DJ style.

Both agreed and stated that they only purchased specific types of music genre (they would keep the music because they loved music).

So, if you was going to sell your disco, would you consider your music collection personal or not?

Going by how many DJs United members have introduced themselves on here with "I used to DJ, gave it up for a few years, and now I'm back (to let you know, I can really shake'em down)"... I don't think that it would be a good idea to sell the disco music collection.

If I knew 100% that I'd never ever ever disco again - eg: Some sort of permanent injury, or very serious family issue that would definately keep me at home every evening (that sorta thing) then I'd still keep hold of the majority of my CD's - with just a few dozen CD's being "surplus to requirements" - the ones that I hate, but have handy, as they get requested.

No, I had more than 70% of my current music collection before I even considered DJing, and I have whilst I have bought a lot more CDs since I started I would not want to lose them even though they are not necessarily all to my taste.

Although I must admit, I have enjoyed a lot of music I would not have considered listening to prior to starting Djing.

When you guys say they are for personal use really and would not sell, did you claim for the cd's as an expense on your VAT return or do you always use works equipment for personal use...

Great point http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/cool.gif

No, I have not claimed for any of my CDs against VAT or for Tax purposes and will not.

I will claim against my karaoke disks though, not a lot of point in keepeing them if I gave up doing Karaoke.

Ok yes the money spent on CDs is a bussiness exspence for me, however I would never sell the music.. I will always be a DJ and to DJ i need my music.. the Roadshow is a seperate item totaly. this will change and items will be bought and sold..

the road show just needs a DJ with music to go with it...

If, in a few years time when everything is hunky dory and I'm doing really really well, someone said "I want to buy your business" then I may consider it but at the end of the day, like many previous comments, the majority of my collection is personal too.

Do I claim expenses?

Yes.

I use my collection to do my job and without the cd's I wouldn't be able to do my job so I claim for them. In all honesty though I hardly have to buy anything as I am on so many promo lists that give them free in order to promote the stuff.

I wouldn't want to sell my collection.

It took a long time to accumulate, wheras audio and lighting equipment can be sourced over a weekend.

On the other hand, technically the music belongs to the business as tax relief has been claimed for it, so where does that put me if I was to sell the business?

I'd never sell the music.

I'm passionate about it anyway, play it in the house, car etc....

Anyway - it takes 'ruddy years' to build up a decent music collection, so why get rid?

A good, passionate DJ loves music and will have a good collection before they say, 'I'm gonna be a DJ....' so why would they need my music?

As with any business asset the music will depreciate over the years and be of little value as an asset as time goes by. There would only be an issue if you sold it for a profit.

And no I would not sell my music as I have collected it for the last 40 years.

They would go. Not that I want them to go....all those DMC & Music Factory discs..

There is nothing I cant replace, one way or another, if needed. They belong to the business anyhow, not me, as pointed out above.

Dave, how do you sell it?

I recently went through a load of CDs, freeing up 2 cases as a result, by pulling out stuff I really couldn't ever see myself playing again.

I've just got piles of the darned things sat about the place at the moment, but are they really worth anything to anyone??

Just for fun, I've just picked a handful off the top:

21st Century Girls - 21st century Girls

Chemical Brothers - Hey Boy, Hey Girl

Chicane - Don't Give Up

Camisra - Feel The Beat

Byron Stingily - Sing A Song

Byron Stingily - Get Up

Sonique - It Feels So Good

Sandy B - Ain't No Need To Hide

Sweet Female Attitude - Flowers

D'Menace - Deep Menace

DJ Kool - Let Me Clear My Throat

OK, Sandy B's one isn't too bad, but is outclassed by her main hit.

Sonique's is pleasant, but just won't ever get played.

So much junk bought in the name of staying current. http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/wallbash.gif

Would never ever consider selling my music, means far too much to me, and also have far too many tunes that I know I'd never be able to find again, especially some of the rarer soul n reggae stuff.

I suppose that amounts to 'DJs law' then.

You get rid of some junk, only to be asked for it at the very next gig. http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/sad.gif

I suppose I can get some cardboard boxes, fill with CDs and bung them in the loft. Costs nothing to do that....

Personally I wouldn't have got rid of that one - bit of a classic IMHO !

superstardeejay might take it off your hands though! http://www.dj-forum.co.uk/html//emoticons/tongue.gif ;-)

I get rid of unwanted CD albums on Amazon Marketplace ... unwanted CD singles go to the charideee shop (local hospice)
